Problem with plastic
Most packaging will never be recycled....
Pollution
9 billion tons
- More than 1 ton of plastic waste per person has already been produced.
- More than 460 million tons of plastic are produced annually.
- There is a garbage island in the Pacific Ocean 3 times the size of France.
More and more waste
28 billion tons
- By 2050, there will be up to 28 billion tons of plastic waste on Earth.
- Packaging is the biggest source of pollution.
- Forecasts predict continued growth in plastic production.
Recycling is a myth
9% recycled
- Only 9% of plastic has been recycled.
- Global average of flexible plastic packaging recycling is close to 0%.
- Most plastic packaging will never be recycled.
The plastic is decomposing...
Microplastics
- Microplastics bioaccumulate in the environment.
- Consequently, you also have it in your body.
- We do not yet know the negative effects of microplastics on human health.
Impact on fauna
Plastic kills animals
- Plastic in the oceans kills 100,000 aquatic mammals a year.
- Up to 1 million seabirds per year are killed by plastic.
- Animals die by eating or becoming entangled in plastic trash.
Climate change
Plastic is made of oil
- Plastic industry is linked to fossil fuels.
- Plastic production generates as much as 3.4% of global emissions.
- In 2050, plastic will account for 20% of global oil consumption.
